Jumping off the Cliff into the unknown world of Business Ownership

I am terrified! I have absolutely no idea what I am doing

I feel like I have just arrived on a foreign planet and everyone else has three heads and four eyes on each of them, and they’re all eating alien bird foie gras for breakfast with their clients and I have one head full of nothing and a plate with some vegemite toast on it and no clients. What the hell am I doing here?

I HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS NOW FOR 2 MONTHS, THE OFFICE IS IN MY BASEMENT AND LOOKS OVER THE MOUNTAINS

I have registered my business, got a domain name, business cards, an ABN, a half completed website, a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram account….and two clients, because after all clients are what it is all about. Without them, all the business cards in the world won’t pay for my dinner.

…then again without some sexy business cards I have nothing to show for my efforts….best get some of those I suppose…

here I am, two months in, two clients on the books, I am writing, designing, editing, building advertising campaigns (which are promising good results already).

I have even started branching out and contributing to a local magazine “Families Magazine Brisbane”.

I HAVE A PIPELINE WITH SOME PROSPECTS, REAL LIFE TANGIBLE BUSINESSES

I have applied for a grant to engage a business mentor, someone to help me with lead generation and further my business setup. I have started using accounting software and learning a WordPress design. I am mastering Facebook Business, learning the intricacies of LinkedIn for good and not for “boring”.  I am creating some pretty cool artwork.

I have attended several networking events (no, not just for the red wine), met some inspirational entrepreneurs, and even hooked up some coffee meetings with a few.

I START REMEMBERING THAT I HAVE BEEN IN THE MARKETING GAME SINCE 2002

It all began in the sleepy town in Canberra when I first started flogging toilet roll holders and toilet seats for a plumbing shop. Since that incredible and unforgettable experience I have created advertising campaigns and strategies for a rainbow of companies, government departments and not for profit organisations. I have found a passion in community services and charities, organisations that work for the betterment of our society and the people that are the very fabric of our city, state, and country.

I have worked all over Australia, the USA and London. I have skills coming out of my eyeballs and goodness knows where else. I am diverse, talented, passionate unique, awesome even.

You might say I am “kinda a big deal” #jokes

Any self-doubt I have I am throwing out the window and while I am in a throwing mood, I am throwing myself into this world, foreign as it may feel, of consultancy.

I am not going to allow this to be frightening, daunting or intimidating. I am going to look to the universe as well as inside myself and to my own abilities and let it be freeing and motivating. I may be swimming with the sharks, but so did so many people who took a chance and the ultimate risk. Look at them now, they own those sharks. They eat those sharks along with their alien bird foie gras and wash it down with fancy-pants champagne (the French kind).

SO WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?

The more I think about it, the more I realise I know exactly what I am doing and it feels good and right, and I am already so much further in just two months than I ever expected to be.

So if you’re thinking about it? Jumping I mean. Stop thinking.

JUMP! What’s the worst that will happen?

You might find yourself succeeding, working in a job you always dreamed of and painting your own picture of the future, with the freedom to decide your next move, setting your own direction, sailing into the sunset on a yacht of achievement and a sense of power.

Sounds pretty appealing to me. Let’s do this!
